noticias urgentesKabul (dpa) – Around 50 people have died at Kabul airport in Afghanistan in recent days, according to the Russian ambassador in the country.

«There is chaos at Kabul airport. The United States cannot secure anything there,» Dmitriy Zhirnov told Russian state television. «There were casualties. About 50 ordinary people have died.»

Russia sent four military transport aircraft to Afghanistan on Wednesday to rescue more than 500 people from different nationalities. Among them were about 360 Russian citizens who are now safe, Zhirnov said.

About 100 other Russians were still in the country, but had so far not expressed the wish to be flown out, he added.

Currently, diplomats are dealing with Afghan students who were attending Russian universities, Zhirnov said. This year alone, 400 Afghans are thought to be enrolled at universities in Russia.
