London (dpa) – Britain’s health secretary has denied that he lied to «everybody in multiple occasions, in meeting after meeting in the cabinet room and publicly» in a statement to lawmakers on Thursday.
Matt Hancock appeared in the House of Commons to defend his position after Dominic Cummings, a former aide to the prime minister, accused him of lying to lawmakers and the public and said he called for Hancock’s sacking several times last year.
Cummings held the position of chief adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson from July 2019 to November 2020, and gave him advice on how to handle the coronavirus outbreak when it struck Britain in March last year.
He was questioned by lawmakers on Wednesday about how the government handled the outbreak of coronavirus in Britain and what can be learned from the experience in the future.
Appearing in Parliament on Thursday, Hancock said: «These allegations that were put yesterday … are serious allegations and I welcome the opportunity to come to the House to formally put on the record that these unsubstantiated allegations around honesty are not true.»
«I’ve been straight with people in public and in private throughout,» he added.
