The Government of Asturias will celebrate next Sunday, March 6th, the World Nature Day in the Natural Park of Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias, in whose environment the Natural Network of Asturias (RENA) organizes guided tours and free activities for children and for all audiences, to commemorate this date.
The Muniellos interpretation centre, in Oubachu, will be the starting point for the guided routes and will also host the children’s activities, from 11:30 to 14:00. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of this protected natural area, as well as its main ecosystems, associating each of them with the traditional uses that have shaped it.
Anyone interested in taking part in any of these activities can book a place by calling 617 976 437.
The Integral Natural Reserve of Muniellos, located in the Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve of Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias, is located in the extreme southwest of Asturias, on the mountain ranges that separate the councils of Ibias and Cangas del Narcea. It is home to some of the most representative values of Asturias’ natural heritage and, in particular, of the western area. The sessile oak forests stand out, making it the most natural oak grove on the Cantabrian coast. Furthermore, this area is home to such representative species of Asturian fauna as the brown bear and the capercaillie.
The protected area has several visitor reception centres. Courias, in Cangas del Narcea, and Zarréu, in Degaña, opened last year, are the gateway to the park, and those of Oubachu and Las Tablizas, in the heart of the nature reserve.
This year a new information centre will be added to the network: the one managed by the Ibias Town Council in the La Palloza complex, which is also a tourist information point for the council. The work of both administrations will allow this facility to be incorporated into the set of resources of the RENA, which currently has 22 centres throughout the territory.
Commemorative day
World Nature Day, sponsored by the UN, is being celebrated this year under the slogan Forests and livelihoods: sustainability of people and planet, with the aim of raising awareness of the value of nature and everything that forms part of it, as well as the problems that affect it.
With more and more species becoming endangered, raising awareness of how we can help conserve the planet so that future generations can continue to enjoy its resources is becoming increasingly important.
