Bangkok (dpa) – Malaysians vaccinated against coronavirus were from Monday permitted to travel outside their region of residence, as a ban imposed in May as part of a third pandemic lockdown was lifted.
The relaxation kicked in as the nearly 33-million-strong nation reached a target of having 90 per cent of adults vaccinated and as the daily case number fell to its lowest since July, with around 6,700 new infections reported on Monday.
«We are climbing down from the peak of disaster and despair,» Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said.
Vaccinated Malaysians can also now travel overseas without having first to get a permit from the government, the government said.
Travel to Malaysia remains difficult, with the border closed to tourists since March last year. The government said last month it plans to discuss potential reopening measures.
Health officials have reported a total of around 2.3 million coronavirus infections and 27,329 related deaths.
