Discovery of 10-ton bombs prompts evacuation of 15,000 in German city

HanoverHanover, Germany (dpa) – About 15,000 people in the German city of Hanover had to leave their homes on Thursday evening so that two 10-ton bombs could be defused, fire officials said.

An exact time for the bomb disposal operation was not given by authorities.

A bomb had been discovered in the city’s Misburg-Nord district on Wednesday. On Thursday, a second bomb was located during a survey of the site.

Coronavirus restrictions were suspended for affected residents so that could stay with relatives or friends.

Two accommodation centres were also set up in large school gymnasiums.

The discovery of unexploded bombs dating to World War II is a common occurrence in Germany.
